FAQ

The short answers.

Is Firn free?

Yes. Firn is free and open source under the Mozilla Public License 2.0, and there's no account to make. If you'd like to help it along, there's a tip jar.

What do I need?

A Mac with macOS 14 or later. The download is on the home page.

Is there a Windows or Linux version?

Not right now. Firn is a Mac app. The Windows version stopped at 0.11.0 and no longer gets updates. If Firn grows and I can find help, I'd love to come back to Windows one day.

What about iPhone and iPad?

They'll come once the Mac app is settled, followed by sync between your devices through your own iCloud, with no Firn server in the middle.

What engine does Firn use?

WebKit, the engine Safari uses. Firn is a native Mac app, written in Swift.

Does it support extensions?

Not yet. Apple's engine has its own support for web extensions, so this is something I can work toward.

How does Firn update?

Once a day, Firn checks whether a new version is out. It asks before it starts checking on its own, and you can turn checks off in Settings. What's new in each version is in the release notes.

Does Firn collect my data?

No. There's no account, no analytics, and no telemetry, and nothing about your browsing is sent to me. The details are on the privacy page.

I found a bug, or have a question

Email [email protected] (I read it myself), or find Firn on GitHub and Discord.
